Deload this autumn: How to recover while sleeping

After an intense summer season, the colder days of autumn offer endurance athletes the ideal setting to focus on regeneration and heal injuries to ensure long-term health and performance.

What many people don't realise is that the body regenerates best during sleep. Of course, recovery outside the bedroom is also important, but no ice bath or sports massage can replace an adequate night's rest. While we sleep, the body performs necessary maintenance work: micro-inflammations are reduced, cells are renewed and muscles and tissues are built up and strengthened.

Regular deloads are essential for body and mind. Thus, many top athletes often take off several weeks from training after tough competitions or an intense season, to give their bodies as well as their psyche the time to fully regenerate. Only in this way can the hormonal system, central nervous system as well as muscles and tissues recover from the intensive stress and optimally prepare for the next training phase.

Anna West, founder of Sleep2perform, confirms the necessity of regularly taking off time to regenerate:

«Optimal sleep is crucial for all of us, but especially for elite athletes, to recover from the mental and physical demands of daily life. Taking a 24-hour perspective is therefore crucial to maintain our health and performance and to be able to call up top performances when needed. Sleepwear by Dagsmejan is an excellent tool to support this.»

Comfortably warm- without overheating

Maintaining the right body temperature is one of the main factors for a good night’s sleep. If our body leaves its climatic comfort zone, the quality of sleep suffers. Especially during autumn and winter, one can easily get too cold, which disturbs sleep just as much as overheating.

Specifically designed for those colder months (or people that feel cold easily), Dagsmejan has developed the Stay Warm collection made of finest merino wool. Thanks to its natural properties, the material is a perfect fit for sleepwear. It has long been indispensable in functional outdoor clothing, above all for its natural insulating properties. Thanks to numerous air pockets, it supports natural thermoregulation and keeps the wearer pleasantly warm without overheating.

But merino, often referred to as nature's high-tech fibre, can do much more than "just" insulate well: While the surface of the fibre repels moisture, it can absorb up to a third of its own weight in moisture on the inside. So if the wearer starts to sweat, the moisture is quickly transported away from the skin, while the surface remains dry despite the sweating.

The fabric used for the collection is made from a blend of finest merino and eucalyptus fibres and was developed together with sleep experts and material scientists from EMPA and the University of Lucerne. The two materials combined keep the wearer pleasantly warm without getting hot and make it not only ultra-light, but also extremely soft and 4x more breathable than cotton.

As with all other collections, ethical & sustainable manufacturing of the products is a priority at Dagsmejan. Therefore all Stay Warm pajamas are made using only mulesing-free merino wool from Nativa, which is 100% traceable. This way, Dagsmejan guarantees respectful treatment of the environment, animals and the people who work along the merino wool value chain.
