Interview with Jasmin Liechti

Until recently, Jasmine Liechti was only known to insiders. This all changed following the World Cycling Championships last September in Zurich. The 22-year-old from Bern became the U23 Vice World Champion in the time trial.
World Championships Zurich ITT
My personal highlight of the 2024 season. Winning the silver medal at the U23 World Championship in the time trial in front of a home crowd was really special and the perfect conclusion to a great season.
Goals 2025
It will be my first season in the Elite category. It would be cool if I were selected for an international TT. Otherwise, I've marked the Track World Championships and European Championships firmly on the calendar as well as individual .1 and .2 road races.
Nexetis – New team for 2025
This year, Switzerland will have its own international women's cycling team, namely the UCI Women's Continental Team NEXETIS. It is a development programme for young athletes launched by Swiss Cycling. I'm proud to be part of it and I'm looking forward to the coming season with cycling races across Europe.
Race track
When I started cycling, I was also supported by Swiss Cycling on the track from the very beginning. The track fascinated me enormously and I've been addicted to it ever since. For me, the road and track perfectly complement each other. The races are shorter, making them faster and more tactical. Compared to the long road races, this makes a nice change on the racing calendar.
Study
It's important to me not only to work on my physique, but also to challenge myself mentally. My business studies at the University of Bern bring a welcome change to my everyday sporting life. Although it also requires discipline and organisation, it's good to be in a different environment from time to time.
Training
My training consists almost exclusively of cycling, whereby I am mostly out on the road. However, when the temperatures drop in winter, I switch to the indoor roller trainer. Training camps in the south, such as in Calpe or Girona, provide a pleasant change and the opportunity to train intensively in better conditions and prepare for the coming season.
Coach
I work closely with my personal trainer. She plans my daily training sessions and optimally prepares me for the upcoming races.
My strength
My greatest strength lies in the time trial. For road racing, I can often use my time trial speed at decisive moments in a targeted manner, for example, to push my own pace in escape attempts and pull away from the other riders. In addition, the ability to fully focus on my performance and use the mental strength of the time trial helps me to stay calm and focused even during intense racing phases.
My weakness
Long, steep climbs and chocolate.
Orienteering
Orienteering was a major passion of mine for over ten years. I particularly liked the combination of physical fitness and the considerable mental challenge. Towards the end of secondary school, I decided to switch to cycling in order to take on a new challenge and pursue my sporting goals further.
Key to success
A lot of hard work, discipline and will, but all with the necessary pinch of fun.
Insider tip
Victory is all in the head. Regular and targeted mental training is therefore essential to me.
