They have won medals at the European Mountain Running Championships or caused a sensation at the Golden Trail World Series. Discover the most important tips from top athletes.

Rémy Bonnet:

  • Enjoy your training, otherwise it will be short-lived.
  • Be sure to train regularly. Consistency is the name of the game.
  • Avoid experimenting during competitions. For example, you must try out equipment or food in advance during training.

Judith Wyder:

  • It doesn't always have to be an ultra (>42 km)! There are competitions with very different technical requirements and lengths from 8 km to 350 km.
  • It is important to also train downhill running and to regularly incorporate tempo runs on the mountain.
  • Good core and leg muscles prevent injuries.

Roberto Delorenzi:

  • Don’t run downhill too fast during training
  • Do stability exercises and strengthen your ankles
  • Don’t force yourself to run uphill. Sometimes it’s better to walk

Rea Iseli:

  • Get used to the effort slowly. It’s best to first start by incorporating up and down routes into your leisurely endurance run and then gradually increase your downhill speed until you can do intervals at the end.
  • It is best to start with soft trails instead of tarmac and uneven surfaces.
  • Don't just associate success with performance-orientated goals and placings, because you can only influence your own performance.

Jonathan Schmid:

  • Prepare for the distance you want to run (mountain run or trail) with appropriate training.
  • With a trail of 1,800 metres in altitude, running downhill is usually the biggest challenge. My tip is therefore to do several downhills of over 1,000 metres in altitude in advance.
  • When preparing for a mountain run, it makes sense to train in the mountains or in hilly terrain. The best preparation is certainly to run the original length of the course on site.
