WHY WARM TEMPERATURES WILL TAMPER WITH OUR SLEEP
Many people know that the temperature in your bedroom shouldn’t be too high – the recommendation is 18°C maximum. What might come as a surprise, though, is that our body temperature plays a crucial role as well. If it is too high, we won’t sleep well.
During the warm summer months, keeping both our homes and our bodies cool can become a challenge. Yet temperature is the key to a good night’s sleep. In order to fall asleep, our body needs to lower its core temperature enough to allow for the production of a sufficient quantity of the sleep hormone melatonin. So, if it’s hot out, we might fall asleep later than usual and, since our body will struggle to stay in its thermal comfort zone, our sleep will be affected.
We might even wake up several times in the night due to excessive sweating, leading to our sleepwear getting soaked. When wearing the wrong fabrics, the heavy, damp feeling on our skin can disrupt our sleep even further.
“For athletes, the recovery process during sleep is just as important as our training! So that we can do our best in competitions, good, deep sleep is essential. That’s why I sleep in Dagsmejan. In these pajamas, I feel totally comfortable and really look forward to going to sleep.” (Tanja Hüberli, European and Swiss volleyball champion)
BEAT THE HEAT: 5 TIPS TO SLEEP BETTER IN SUMMER
The good news is that there are a few things we can do to help our bodies get a good night’s rest despite rising temperatures:
- Keep your bedroom drapes closed during the day and your windows open at night when the outside air has cooled down a bit.
- Keep the light out before bedtime by closing drapes or blinds shortly before you go to bed. A sleep mask can help as well.
- Keep your dinner light, especially if you are eating later than usual. Avoid heavy, spicy foods, as well as stimulating substances such as caffeine and alcohol.
- Keep your sleep schedule as regular as possible. This means going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time, even on weekends.
- Wear the right fabrics in bed. Your sleepwear should be light, breathable, and help your body regulate its temperature throughout the night, for example by absorbing moisture to keep you cool and dry.
“For me, it’s hugely important to choose specifically designed, technical sleepwear that helps the body to maintain optimum conditions for sleep. After just the first night, I was convinced by the immense comfort offered by Dagsmejan.” (Ronnie Schildknecht, 11-time Iron Man champion from Switzerland)
HOW FUNCTIONAL SLEEPWEAR FROM DAGSMEJAN COOLS YOU DOWN
Studies show that it’s not just in summer that many athletes are too hot to sleep at night. Seven out of ten state that they sweat at night all year round. In summer, this will worsen for most of them. Cooling pajamas from the Dagsmejan Stay Cool collection are the answer.
“Sleepwear from Dagsmejan helps me to maintain my body temperature so I don’t feel too cold or too hot at night. It’s also extremely comfortable and cozy to wear.” (Joscha Burkhalter, Swiss biathlete)
Dagsmejan’s innovative NATTCOOLTM fabric is produced using natural eucalyptus fibers, which make for a lightweight material that:
- is softer than silk,
- is cooler than linen,
- is 8x more breathable than cotton,
- regulates the body’s moisture better than cotton, and
- dries 3x quicker.
The fabric draws excess heat away from the skin via millions of nanocapillaries so that ideally, we don’t sweat at all. But if we do, it dries quickly so it never feels damp on the skin. What’s more, the material absorbs some of the moisture that occurs when we sweat, and that adds to the cooling effect through evaporative cooling. That means the Stay Cool sleepwear from Dagsmejan, with its combination of the finest natural fibers and modern textile technology, keeps us comfortably cool so we don’t overheat on warm nights, and we sleep better as a result.
“When training, every aspect is optimized, but it’s sleep that actually forms the basis of my performance. Since the very first time I tried the Dagsmejan sleepwear, it has become a permanent feature of my sleep routine.” (Fabian Meeusen, Swiss triathlon champion)
