When running, swimming, or cycling, most people pay attention to pulse, pace, or watts. One factor is often overlooked, even though it is just as crucial: breathing. The breathing rate directly affects how efficiently the body absorbs oxygen, how long the muscles remain resilient, and how quickly one recovers.

Breathing is a real peculiarity: it is the only bodily function that runs on its own – without conscious intervention – and yet can be taken over at any time. Heartbeat or digestion cannot be consciously controlled, but breathing can. Those who know when and how to intervene can specifically influence stress, recovery, and concentration.

Why Breathing Rate Matters

At rest, an adult breathes 12 to 18 times per minute, significantly more under stress. What matters is not just how often, but how efficiently one breathes. Rapid, shallow chest breathing moves a lot of air, but the gas exchange in the alveoli remains inefficient. The result: premature fatigue of the respiratory muscles, side stitches, or the feeling of "not getting enough air," even though there is objectively enough oxygen available.

Well-trained endurance athletes often breathe less frequently at the same load but with a larger tidal volume. Breathing remains more economical, the respiratory muscles fatigue later, and carbon dioxide regulation works better, stabilizing the blood pH and delaying muscle acidification. Thus, breathing is a real performance factor, not a sideshow.

Proper Breathing in Everyday Life and Sports

In everyday life, many people unconsciously breathe too shallowly, into the upper chest instead of the abdomen. This high breathing activates the sympathetic nervous system and keeps the body unnecessarily tense. More efficient is diaphragmatic breathing: when inhaling, the diaphragm lowers, the abdomen bulges forward, and the lungs fully expand. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for recovery. Those who occasionally become aware of how they breathe in everyday life – at the desk, in traffic, before falling asleep – also train a more economical basic breathing pattern, which benefits them in sports.

In sports, it is crucial that breathing keeps up with the load instead of slowing it down. As intensity increases, one should breathe through both mouth and nose simultaneously – pure nasal breathing is usually not enough. Even under stress, it is worthwhile to consciously breathe into the abdomen regularly instead of "just" lifting the chest. Before the start or, for example, during a descent in a cycling race, a deliberately long exhalation helps to reduce nervousness and calm the pulse.

Exercises for Breathing, Relaxation, Calmness, and Concentration

  • Diaphragmatic Breathing Lying Down: Place one hand on the abdomen, one on the chest. Inhale through the nose so that only the abdominal hand rises, then exhale slowly through the mouth. 
    → Goal: sharpen the feeling for diaphragmatic breathing, so it becomes automatic basic breathing – five to ten minutes daily.

  • 4-7-8 Breathing: Inhale for four seconds, hold the breath for seven seconds, exhale for eight seconds. 
    → Goal: calm the nervous system and reach calmness faster – ideal before falling asleep or in stressful moments.

  • 4-4-4-4 Box Breathing: Inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds. 
    → Goal: calm the mind and pulse while sharpening concentration – for example, before competitions or exams.

  • Lip Brake: Inhale through the nose, exhale slowly through slightly closed lips, as if gently blowing out a candle. 
    → Goal: calm breathing faster after intense exertion and lower the pulse more quickly.

  • Breath Counting Meditation: Count your own breaths for five to ten minutes, from one to ten, then start over. 
    → Goal: focus the mind on a single focal point – promotes calmness and trains concentration ability, also as a short break in everyday life.

Those who regularly practice these techniques benefit doubly: more composure in everyday life, more economical breathing, and faster recovery in sports. The advantage remains the same: breathing runs on its own but is always ready as a controllable tool – you just need to know when and how to use it.
